ABOUT AIMF

WHO WE ARE

The Aspen International Mountain Foundation (AIMF), based in Aspen, Colorado, works to sustain and uplift mountain communities and ecosystems around the world.

A proud member of the UN Mountain Partnership, the global alliance for sustainable mountain development hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). AIMF has represented North and Central America and the Caribbean on its Steering Committee since 2013.

Founded in 2001, AIMF has been a constant voice for mountain regions—helping shape the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) for mountains, participating in global climate discussions, and inspiring collaboration among communities that call mountains home.

Our mission is rooted in connection: sharing stories and solutions, preserving culture, promoting education, and inspiring new generations to care for these remarkable landscapes.

OUR MISSION

To promote sustainable mountain development locally and globally by connecting mountain communities, advancing environmental stewardship, and fostering collaboration through education, advocacy, and international partnerships.

WHAT WE DO

AIMF brings together people and ideas to strengthen mountain life. We:

  • Represent our UN Mountain Partnership region (North and Central America and the Caribbean)

  • Convene stakeholders working toward sustainability and climate resilience

  • Lead and support projects that protect mountain ecosystems and cultures

  • Host forums and events that celebrate mountain life and raise awareness worldwide

WHERE WE CAME FROM

Born in Aspen in 2001, AIMF grew from a decade of collaboration among the United Nations Environment Programme, the City of Aspen, the Aspen Institute, and Aspen Sister Cities. These early partnerships—and international gatherings from Japan to Chamonix—sparked a movement dedicated to sustainable mountain development.

In 2017, AIMF joined forces with the Telluride Institute and Western Colorado University’s Center for Mountain Transitions to create the Mountain Resilience Coalition, continuing our shared mission to build strong, sustainable mountain communities for the future.

ABOUT ASPEN, COLORADO

Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and steeped in history, Aspen hosts approximately 1.5 million visitors from all over the world each year. Our town offers exceptional skiing, first rate amenities, facilities, lodging, shopping and dining as well as year-round music and activities. Despite its popularity as a tourist destination, Aspen retains an authentic small-town feel. The City of Aspen and Aspen Snowmass (formerly the Aspen Skiing Company) have been recognized for their efforts to protect the environment and develop new sustainability tools and practices.

Colorado is known for its decades-long leadership role protecting the environment, launching clean-energy projects and enacting pioneering climate change legislation. Governor Polis recently launched a ‘road map’ with the guiding policies necessary to meet targets set in Colorado’s 2019 Climate Action Plan.

“Keep close to Nature's heart and break clear away…climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.”
