History

Before establishing AIMF, its members produced the Sustainable Mountain Conference in Hokkaido, Japan in 1995 in partnership with UNEP and Sister Cities International. In the following years, AIMF members co-hosted several conferences in the United States including a plenary session that was the foundation for the Chamonix Tourism Summits, international forums that have been held since 1999 to address sustainable tourism issues.

In the fall of 2002, AIMF hosted a community celebration in concert with the United Nation's Year of the Mountain 2002. Over 50 local organizations were recognized for their contributions to sustainability in our mountain environment. The celebration also featured presentations by celebrated Everest mountaineers Neil Beidleman and Michael Brown. Brown previewed his film about blind climber Erik Weihenmayer's 2000 summit of Mt. Everest, "Everest: Farther than the Eye Can See."
